They are quite tart, much like a McIntosh in taste/texture. I figure I'll use many of them in morning green smoothies, and am thinking of using the rest in a rustic applesauce - maybe blitz the lot up in the BlendTec skins intact, then simmer them up with maple syrup, cinnamon and maybe a few other sweet and earthy spices. You guys have any other ideas for using up these (somewhat tart) apples?
On a totally separate and pity party note, kinda' bummed that I haven't been included in the VegNews Awards nominations this year. Not for cookbook author or blog. Boo. Bummed. I know the competition is stiff, and I've never won. And, I realize it's trivial, but still, not to be nominated this year makes me feel blue.

First, my husband loves McIntosh apples, but we can't find them anywhere around here.....and this place is not known for growing apples. That's one thing I miss about living in Ohio a couple of years ago.....so many apples.

we love a good apple crisp.. and if the apples are tart, then adding in some raspberries or sweet cherries helps to balance it all out!

ReplyDeleteThose look like transparent apples--absolutely the BEST apple for baking! They freeze well too. No need to peel, just core, slice and freeze. They make the best apple sauce (with some ginger, cinnamon and cardamom), crisp and pies.

ReplyDeleteRegarding the apples, they do look delicious. However, I just finished reading Garden Spells (a fiction book that I recommend) and I'm going to stay away from apples for a while. :-)
To the Moffat Family: HA! I love Garden Spells and I can understand the temporary aversion to apples!! I read the book when it first came out so I'm good though! I love apples in all their forms and incarnations!

ReplyDeleteSorry about not being nominated. For the record, your cookbooks are among my "go-to" cookbooks in my daily cooking. And if cookies are on my mind, I really don't bother with any other cookbook authors! Occasionally I'll give someone else's Earth Balanced based cookie a try, and I always think "eh...should have made one of Dreena's recipes!"

Nobody does vegan baking better than you (and, as you know, your recipes were huge inspiration for my own cookbook--also not nominated!). I've added you in as well. If they're smart, they'll update the polls!
