Here it is guys, the cookbook news!
My new cookbook Let Them Eat Vegan! will be published by Da Capo Press in Spring 2012! YAY!
This book is my biggest (and dare I say best?) yet, with 200 recipes that are wholesome, delicious, real food vegan eating. We're talking beans 'n greens, grains and nuts, and veg and fruit. And, cookie love.
Here is what you won't find in LTEV:
- Recipes using processed vegan subs like sour cream, cream cheese, margarine, soy or wheat-meats, or cheeses (though, I understand the Daiya love... really I do, we love it too. I just don't ask you to go buy it for a recipe).
- White refined stuff. You know, white flour, white rice, white sugar, white pasta.
- Difficult recipes that require oodles of time in the kitchen. As much as I enjoy spending time in the kitchen, I get that some of you don't! And, with three young'ns, some days I can't either.
And here is what you WILL find in LTEV:
- Recipes that make creams and cheeses and sauces and burgers and casseroles and soups and tarts and desserts and all sorts of deliciousness using the basics - beans and nuts and grains and veggies and seeds and non-dairy milks and fruits... and some love.
- Did I mention beans? Lots of them. We eat beans every day, every way. You can too, I make it easy and delicious to do so!
- Wheat-Free and Gluten-Free recipes. All my recipes are naturally wheat-free with the exception of a few and for these I give wheat and gluten-free substitutions. Many recipes are also naturally gluten-free (as a lot of whole-food vegan cooking and baking is inherently gluten-free). Still, I offer gluten-free substitutions where I can, and also have many dedicated gluten-free recipes (ex: gf pie crust, gf cakes and cookies and more!) I also give some soy-free options, though they are needed less as most of the book is by default soy-free (with the exception of a few dedicated tempeh and tofu entrees).
- Raw dressings, salads, sauces, and desserts! (Think "Kale-slaw", "Lemon-Lime Cheesecake", "Fresh Yellow Tomato Sauce" and "Banana Nut Squares") Yum.
- Recipes that will be loved by vegans and also non-vegans. Let Them (all) Eat Vegan!
- Options, options, options. Like family-friendly offerings like casseroles and soups and really healthy cookies and treats, but also more adventurous, kicked-up and spicy dishes (think "Jerk Chickpeas").
- "Dreena Dazs". You know I love ice cream, I give you a chapter of it. Plus, a lot of cookies to go with that ice cream. Now we're talking.
- And, photos! Some of the recipes we photographed include:
* Gluten-Free Banana-Scented Cupcakes with Cooked Chocolate Frosting
* Thai Chickpea Almond Curry
* White Bean Pesto Spread and "Romesc-oat" Sauce
* Whole-Grain Chia Pancakes with Warm Strawberry Sauce
* Fragrant Kidney Bean Lentil Dahl with Indian-Inspired Rice
* Lemon-Lime Cheesecake with Coconut Nut Crust and Fresh Mango Sauce
* Pan-Fried Falafels with Smoky-Spiked Tahini Sauce and Quinoa Taboulleh
* Raw Banana Nut Squares with Cream Cheese Frosting
* Kale-Slaw with Curried Almond Dressing
* French Lentil Soup with Smoked Paprika
* "Veg-veeta" Dip
* Blueberry Coffee Cake with Cinnamon-Walnut Crumble Topping
* Festive Chickpea Tart
* Citrus-Scented Almond Muffins
* Green Smoothie
* Truffled Cashew Cheese
* Creamy Barley Risotto with Fresh Thyme and Star Anise
* Creamed Cheese Brownies with Salted Dark Chocolate Topping
and more...!
And finally, with this book, I give you four or so years of pouring my heart and soul into recipe development and testing. These are the recipes I make with love for my family. I hope you will make for the ones you love, to nourish and delight them. Let Them Eat Vegan!

How are we supposed to wait until 2012?!!!! :-)
:D Anne, maybe I'll count it down in "how many sleeps left" - that might make it sound sooner than a calendar year away when it's just a matter of months!
Wonderful news! Congratulations Dreena. I know it will be beautiful and full of reliable, delicious, healthful recipes.
xo
i've got about 5 omni's who swear they will buy your book for the Peanut Butter Chai ice cream recipe alone. and a dozen others begging for numerous other recipes (Moroccan bean stew! coconut banana muffins!)
YAY!!!!! I am SO excited for this book! I love that you included a "salted" dessert recipe...I'm kinda obsessed...
Oh wow, that sounds great! I'm especially glad to hear about the lack of vegan versions of inherently dairy foods - I don't need a dedicated vegan cookbook to use those. I can't wait to add this to my collection!
Can't wait! Is it available for pre-order yet?
I love that your recipes won't rely on fake meat and weird soy cream cheese and the like. Bring on the whole grains and beans, I say!
Thrilled and honored to have been a part of your brilliant process, Dreena. I can't wait to see it all in print. :)
YAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I can barely wait!!!!!
xo
Can't wait to get your book. The veg-veeta recipe is very tempting!
I'm glad your book doesn't rely on refined stuff and things like cheeze and sour cream.
This looks great! Love that it is the basics as we are old school and I don't buy a ton of the "subs".
This is wonderful news. I love the name. Great to see some of my fave recipes are getting pictures!
Stefania
Yay! Love the title choice, that is perfect!
Congratulations! You can add me to the list of people who can't wait for it to come out. You really had me at the lists of what we won't and will find in your book: it made it crystal clear that it's right up my alley!
YES, I will buy your book, I am looking forward to the made-from-scratch meals. I don't like buying from the store, I have to put my glasses on and read the ingredient list, it just takes too much time and effort. Plus I have to to three different stores to get what I need!
YAY! Congrats Dreena, I can't wait to get my little paws on the new book. What a great name too, so clever!
congrats!
I can't wait!! Congrats!
Sounds like a great cook book! I'm glad there will be recipes that aren't too difficult, I'm a little challenged in the culinary department.
I'm pretty new to the vegan diet so I'm curious, what do you recommend as the best and healthiest cheese replacement?
Thanks!
looking forward to the new book:)
will it be available through chapters/indigo? and can it be pre ordered?
can't wait for it.
OMG!!! I am so excited, just can't wait! That list made me hungry. We do eat some cheese about once a month other than that we are all vegan. As we are homeschooling this year we are going to do our best to be cheese free. Lots of cooking days where we are going to make nut cheeses. We are even taking a trip to a local farm sanctuary were everyone is vegan. Hope that breaks my kids wanting cheese. Not that they eat that much anyways :)
Thanks for your wonderful blog!!
I'm so excited about this! Particularly about the multitude of wheat and gluten-free options, as I have recently determined that I have a wheat sensitivity. Thank you Dreena!
Looking forward to this new cookbook, Dreena! Hannah's photography skills are top-notch, so I'm sure this collaboration will be epic :).
I love the name you ended up choosing and I'm honored I got to help test for it! :)
Congrats!
Yes!!!! Congratulations, Dreena!
... so that's how many sleeps until we can get our hands on your amazing new creation?
I could kiss you!
Four years in the making! This deserves a real celebration! Huge congratulations.
So excited for this one as I'm trying to be a more "nutritarian" vegan (no oil, salt, white stuff, caffeine, etc). How can we pre-order the book? I don't know how I'll be able to wait for so long!
it will be awesome! can't wait.
Wow!!! I can't wait. Congratulations......it sounds like an amazing book :)
SO EXCITED!
Dreena,
This book sounds like *exactly* what I want in a cookbook. I really can't wait - so excited. Congratulations and keep being fabulous!
this sounds great .. it looks so delicious thanks for the post !
Yow wow! I can't wait! Spring 2012 seems soooo far away...
Congratulations!
Fabulous name! And, I love the premise for the book. I can't wait to get my copy! Congratulations on all the hard work on what sounds to be a fantastic, healthy, and delicious cookbook!

Amazing, can't wait!!! It'll be a much appreciated early spring gift to myself (and my husband!). :)
Perfect title! Can't wait for this to come out - I'll be pre-ordering as soon as I can!
So excited, Dreena! Congratulations. Definitely looking forward to this one quite a bit.
And I love the name! After the hubbub about the name the first time around, I think you found a perfect one.
Dreena, can't wait for the new book. I have a hard time with all the processed vegan stuff so I love that you are sharing the whole foods approach to eating green (which is of course, the greenest approach of all!).
Those all sounds as if they will be delicious...
Love the title! Congratulations, Dreena. I am eagerly awaiting this one.
" Recipes using processed vegan subs like sour cream, cream cheese, margarine, soy or wheat-meats, or cheeses (though, I understand the Daiya love... really I do, we love it too. I just don't ask you to go buy it for a recipe)."
I'm so happy about this. I basically gave up on vegan cookbooks because so many of the recipes rely on ingredients I can't find in Australia.
YAY! I want it now!! (But I'll try to wait patiently) On the search for ice cream makers ... any suggestions??
This cookbook sounds great! What is the delicious-looking creamy pasta & peas dish in the banner at the top of the page? I'm so craving pasta while looking at that picture!
So exciting. I haven't had much time to check your blog this summer. It was so nice to check today and get such good news!!!! Thanks for your hard work. I can't wait til SPring!!
I LOVE the title you chose and I LOVE that Da Capo Press is publishing the book. YAY! I can't wait to have a beautiful, bound copy in my hands.
I can't wait. I am not a fan of processed vegan substitutes, so I'm always excited when I find cookbooks I'll actually use.
Thank you guys for sharing my enthusiasm, I hope you love this book as much, or more, than my previous titles.
To some q's:
- it's not available for preorder yet, but I'll post when it is.
- Tessa, for cheese replacements - it depends on your use, and also if you want to make it yourself or not. I use nut cheeses a lot for spreads, in pasta dishes, on pizza, etc. But, if we want a stretchy melty cheese to use in our bean quesadillas, or to top burritos or something, I'll use Daiya. There are other brands, but Daiya is the best for a melted cheese sub. I have a cashew cheese recipe on my recipes blog here:http://viveleveganrecipes.blogspot.com/2010/07/truffled-cashew-cheese.html
- Nicole, I use a Kitchenaid ice cream maker that is an attachment you can buy for the mixer (if you have one, it's very handy). The bowl goes in the freezer, and then simply pops on to the mixer base when ready to use with an attachment paddle. I love it! Here's the link: http://www.amazon.com/KitchenAid-KICA0WH-Cream-Maker-Attachment/dp/B0002IES80/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1315485786&sr=8-1
I'm so excited for your new cookbook! Can't wait to pre-order. :)
I love that you don't use processed vegan products too. That's how I also prefer to cook as well. Hopefully I can attend a book signing and meet you in person!
Yay! I can't wait! That is really the thing that I have liked best about your other books...I can get all of the ingredients - there is nothing too far out there that I can't get in my small town.
yippy, one step closer to getting LTEV.i was able to pre-order last week at our local Coles Books(Chapters-Indigo).
Thanx so much Dreena.
Sahrah, I'm tickled that you were able to preorder already, thx for letting me know! :)
I just found your blog and am absolutely ecstatic to see your book. I am in the process of transition our family (7,5,3, and 4 months plus a mostly supportive hubby:) to a raw/vegan diet. I can't WAIT to see what your book has in store for us!!!
I am honestly say that i am junkies for Thai food. I can't wait more because i am really curious for delicious recipe.
How many of the recipes use nuts? I'm just starting to go more down the vegan path, but as the mother of a child with severe tree nut allergies, it's hard to find recipes that aren't loaded with nuts or processed substitutes.
LH, I have tried to strike a balance in the book. There are definitely nut-based recipes as nuts can be used to make creamy, thick, luscious textures without using processed products. But, I often give substitutes to make something without nuts, and also, there are many legume and grain-centric recipes that use no nuts at all.
Oh, I am soooo excited for this! I don't normally read your blog, just because I don't spend much time on the computer, but I love your cookbooks! Especially "Eat, Drink and Be Vegan". I cook recipes from it several times a week. We are gluten free and vegan, so there are so many great recipes that are always easy to make. We are having Olive Oyl pasta tonight! Thanks for such a great book and looking forward to the new one :)
Hi Dreena,
I have your books and have come to appreaciate you enormously although I am not a vegan. My daughter has a milk allergy and I bought your books to help me cook for her. I do eat a lot more plants than before and have learned a lot from your books/blogs. Some day I'd like to ask you some more questions about raising kids on a plant based diet, but for now I just wanted to say thank you and I will surely buy your new book. Claudia
