Recipe Post: Vegan Chocolate Chip Cookies

I originally posted this image for my Homestyle Chocolate Chip Cookies in December. These cookies can also be made wheat-free, which is the topic for my cooking segment on today's Erik's Diner podcast.

So, I have posted this recipe for all of you that want to try fabulous cookies that are dairy-free, egg-free, and can also be made wheat-free!

Vive le Vegan!
has many other wheat-free recipes, desserts and otherwise. If you like these cookies, you'll love Vive's Fudgy Brownies, Peanut 'Better' Cookies, Carob-Coconut-Pecan Cookies... and others! I'll post photos of these sweet treats soon!

By the way, if you haven't been tuning in to Erik's weekly podcasts, you're missing out! So, link on over to Vegan.com, and also check out his incredible new book, Meat Market.

Oh my gosh, those look so good! Why haven't I made these yet???

Its too bad I've sworn off baking for a while! Everytime I do, I say I'll just eat one or two, then end up eating half of them, and that's how I gained weight. So until I get that under control...no more baked goods :(

Maybe I'll make them for other people! They look so moist.

Oh ya, I made your chickpea ratatouille tonite...yum!

I put a picture of it on my blog for all to see!

Hi Melissa!

You MUST make them, even have just one or two and share the rest... they freeze great too!

Thanks for the post of the chickpea ratatouille! Your photo looks great too. I LOVE the chickpea ratatouille... other than desserts I think it's my favorite recipe from Vive, and like you say on your blog, the oven does all the work. Thanks for the mention and for your kind and very nice words!!

Now, go be nice to yourself and make some cookies. :)

Dreena,

Have you done any experiments with gluten free flours?

I made the cookies! I used spelt just for the heck of it, and they are so good! My sister ate 4 of them, I had one and my boyfriend got the last 5. I gave you major props on my blog again, I can't believe how good they were!

Been on a baking kick today. So I might just test these out. I can attest to the goodness of the brownies in Vive le Vegan. I made them a few weeks ago to share with everyone at our Habitat for Humanity meeting. I know there's not tofu in them, but a professed tofu-hater who gets suspicious of anything vegan loved them.

You really should make them, if you're in the kitchen already. The ingredients are simple and they take no time to make!

Melissa, you're just awesome! Thanks for posting my cookies on your blog (again)! You do more cooking/baking than I do... time for you to write a cookbook! :) I'm really glad you liked them, and many thanks again!!

Hi Danielle... I have done a little baking with non-gluten flours, and the results are okay, but not fantastic (at least so far). Many gluten-free cookies that you can buy contain eggs, just because they help hold the cookies together. Without that gluten, it becomes a bit tricky. Do you have a gluten allergy? Do you bake gluten-free yourself?

Hi Sarchan! Thanks for plug for the Fudgy Brownies. They are absolutely one of my favorite sweets. In fact, I was going to make a batch today, but just got overwhelmed with activities/stuff with the kids... so I plan to make a batch the weekend to post a pic next week! Thanks and welcome!

Someone needs to send some cookies or brownies to Harmonia... :)

Hi Dreena,

Yes, I was diagnosed with a gluten allergy about a year ago. Since then, I have pretty much stopped baking because baking with gluten free flours seems so difficult.

I have successfully made a loaf and scones from The Food Allergy Survival Guide (which includes vegan recipes) and Brown Rice Banana Raisin muffins from La Dolce Vegan.

Goodness. So, I did end up making these tonight. And the one I sampled was brilliant. They taste so buttery and good. It's nice the recipe only makes a small batch (although the cookies are quite sizeable :)); even still, I froze half of them. The rest are for sharing with the roommate and packing in my lunch. I plan on posting picturestomorrow.

Thanks Sarchan! They freeze really well too, although ours don't usually make it to the freezer!

Danielle, some of my cookie bars might be the easiest/best to substitute the gluten flours with a rice or millet flour. I plan to post a photo soon for my "Chocolate Hemp Squares". These are really tasty, and because they use cereal crumbs in the base, you could easily use a gluten-free cereal here. If I come up with anything else I'll let you know! Good luck...:)
