Mr. Pumpkin Head

Some Halloween silliness. I love Halloween, and it's one thing that gets me through the cold of fall. (that and lots of tea. and chocolate. and ice cream. I know, counterproductive, but true ice cream lovers eat it year 'round.)

Though I love Halloween, and love to decorate and share the excitement wtih our girls, I really, really don't love carving pumpkins. It's an arduous task, very messy, and well - a tad dangerous hacking at a raw winter squash with a sharp knife. Plus, it often becomes a 'mom or dad job' rather than a kid activity - at least when their young.

This year, pumpkin decorating was easy and definitely kid-friendly! Behold, our Mr (and Mrs) Pumpkin Heads...

I cannot take credit for this idea. I saw it in a magazine (don't recall which) while waiting for a chiro appointment. But, it's as simple as getting some small pumpkins, poking holes with a small screwdriver, and - oh - having a "Mr. Potato Head" game. We thought it was particularly funny given the Mr. Potato Head in our house. I especially love this guy. How cute is he?!!

Even Sarabi likes the fun and game Halloween... see, she's totally feelin' the spooky spirit...

Happy Halloweeeeeeeen!

What a cute idea. Those pumpkins are awesome and I bet you all had fun creating them.

Speaking of Halloween and chocolate- Have you heard of Reverse trick or treating (http://www.globalexchange.org/campaigns/fairtrade/
cocoa/reversetrickortreating/).
They even have a Canada site. (Sorry I wouldn't normally plug these things but this is such a great way to get people talking about the rights of farm workers.)

That's such an adorable idea! Very clean and easy. I, myself, skipped out on the pumpkin carving this year. I just can't deal with the mess. Maybe next year I'll do it.

Such a cute cat, too. My cat would prolly slap me across the face if I tried to put a costume on her. LoL She's a snob. But we love her. :)

oh my goodness Dreena, the Mr. Pumpkin Heads are brilliant!! I agree, pumpkin carving is so messy (and slightly dangerous) that it takes the fun out of making jack-o-lanterns.

Sarabi makes the CUTEST little vampire (that is the costume, right? haha).

Happy Halloween!! It's a HUGE holiday around here, since we love horror movies; and it's not only one of my brothers' birthdays, but it's also one of my sisters-in-laws' birthdays!! :0)

the pumpkin heads are GENIUS! I didn't buy a pumpkin this year, so I carved a couple turnips (I'll put pics in my blog tomorrow), which was less mess, but also less fun than pumpkin-carving. I'll have to keep your idea in mind for next year, though!

lulz!! how funny. What is it with us... We are all such crazyheads for Hallowe'en!! I for one LOVE carving pumpkins (this year our jack-o-lantern art features freddy krueger, hannibal lechter, and other scary movie stars)... but nowadays I buy the craft pumpkins because they are SO MUCH WORK that its a shame to have to toss 'em after. I hope you're dressing up!!!

I have that magazine! (Canadian Family, I believe...)
And your cat is adorable. My cats would totally never keep a costume on. Haha!
Happy Halloween!

Hey- I am dying to try out an idea for not carving pumpkins, but still getting the "fruits of the labor." My neighbor suggested that you just cut the top off, scoop out the innards (ok, so you still have to do this messy party), and then put it on a baking sheet for about an hour (longer if it's larger) at 325 Farenheit. Then, the skin just peels right off (so she says, and she's an amazingly talented cook). I'm thinking about doing this, this weekend, as I didn't get around to carving my pumpkin this year (too many teacher things came up). I can't wait to eat the pumpkin seeds! I've always loved carving pumpkins, but I agree the insides are nasty. I toast my seeds in the oven, and then stir fry them with a little oil, sugar and cinnamon. Yum!

Too cute. Why stop at pumpkins and potatoes, right?
