Super Foods: Hemp Seeds

I talk about hemp seeds in my current T/S post, and include cooking tips and two recipes using hemp seeds - one for a Hemp-anana Smoothie (a current morning fix for me!) and "Spicoli" Burgers.

Go get your hemp on!

(p.s. Millie, I haven't received an e-mail from you about the Xan Confections giveaway. If I don't get an e-mail from you by Wednesday the 19th, I'll have to draw another winner... so please e-mail soon if you're reading!)

I've never tried hemp seeds so I'm eager to try out these recipes! Can anyone recommend a good place to find them? Only available at health food stores?

What a timely post... I actually just made the Spicoli Burgers from your ED&BV book for dinner (for the 100th time) tonight!

(They always make me look like a vega rockstar, by the way!)

Now I'll have to give your smoothie recipe a try, too - especially since the burgers are the only thing that have made me like hemp seeds thus far.

PS Mary-Kate, I find my hemp seeds at Whole Foods. I don't know if you have one of those near-by or not, but you could also order them off of amazon.com, I believe.

Love, love the Spicoli Burger. They are staple in my house. I have found that adding the flour into the mixture helps them stick together. I also bake them for about 30 minutes at 350 or so (400 on my gas oven).

I recently switched from soy to Vanilla Hemp Milk in my coffee... yummy and none of that iffy soy milk worries.

Mary-Kate, you can also look into buying them bulk (5 lb pails)online, here's a link: http://www.manitobaharvest.com/cartshop/productlist.asp

thanks for your notes everyone... :) :)

I'm so glad you've posted about hemp seeds. I drink hemp milk quite a bit, but have yet to try the seeds themselves. Sounds silly, but you've made me braver now.

Hemp seeds are awesome. But beware of Rocky Mountain Grain Products which package their product in an inferior plastic tub which isn't even airtight, let alone light-proof (both are very important to preserve freshness). They've also decided to start a nasty ad campaign against some of their rivals. http://www.hemphearts.com/InvoiceSale/
They might sound cheap - but you get what you pay for!

I am a huge fan of hemp foods. I keep a little bowl of hemp seeds on my desk for snacking all the time. :)
