Make This New Year a Healthy One!

Happy New Year everyone!  I'm getting back into regular routine with the family, and hope you are all easing back into the swing of things after a restful holiday break.  The holidays are a funny thing, aren't they?  Part restful, part chaotic!  The change of pace was welcome in our household, with a break from school and activities, and also having my mom visit from Newfoundland.

In this upcoming year I'm going to try and showcase as much new and healthy food (ie recipes for new cookbook) as possible, as well as continue to offer up my perspective as a mom and vegan cook.   As far as when that new cookbook will be out, I can only say I'll let you know when I've committed to a date!

The China Study: The Most Comprehensive Study of Nutrition Ever Conducted and the Startling Implications for Diet, Weight Loss and Long-term HealthSo, to start off this year of posts, my latest true/slant piece is Stop Getting Sucked Into Diets.  It irks me with every new year that the media plays into the guilt of holiday overindulgence with 'the best' diet tips and tricks.  I think diets are largely unsuccessful.  Sure, some folks succeed, but many (many) more fail - including those that have had temporary successes.  That's the problem, diets are temporary fixes.  We need to look at long-term sensible lifestyle and dietary changes.  And, as I mention in my t/s article, if you haven't yet read The China Study, do so!

I'll be back very soon with some food pics.  Until then, happy (and healthy - and delicious) eats!

The China Study changed my life for the better. I hate "diets" the way they are viewed in America and much prefer to help my family and friends make lifestyle changes that will make a tremendous difference to their health in the long-run.

Happy New Year Dreena!
The China Study convinced my brother and a few colleagues to go vegan. People often say that going vegan "for your health" won't stick. But my brother said after reading the China Study he could NEVER eat dairy again (he was already vegetarian). The research is pretty hard to ignore.
I look forward to your recipe posts. I would love to help with recipe testing if you need some assistance.

I'm with you on the diet thing! Last year about this time I went on a non-diet learning and re-learning about having a healthy lifestyle, what healthy foods to enjoy and finding fitness that I loved so much I looked forward to doing. Instead of focusing on what not to eat, I turned my attention to what great + nutritious foods I could. I've started incorporating vegetarian and vegan foods and meals into my diet. I continue to learn every day and hope to continue to do so in the future.

Happy New Years!

Reading "The China Study" is what convinced me I should try being a vegan. Personally, I'm going with healthy. I've given up on thin.

I'm so glad to see more people reading the China Study. It has parts that can be scientifically hard to get through but it is an outstanding book. My husband and I are vegans but our children have made their own choices. We no longer ave non-vegan alternatives in our home. They used to choose cheese or yogurt and as long as it was natural, I would go ahead with it. If I had the stamina, I would try more raw foods. Love your blog!!

I got your cookbook (eat, drink, and be vegan) for christmas and I absolutely love it! Also, the China Study is great. I always want to give it as a gift but I'm afraid my friends will think I'm proselytizing. Oh well, must get rid of the fear.

I can't tell you how happy I am that you have written this. As a fitness instructor, nutritionist, chef, and former heavy weight [285lbs now 130lbs] I know how hard the lifestyle change can be. If people really knew the damaging effects that dairy, animal proteins and the like do to their bodies I would hope they would want to start the new year off right.

Appreciate your comments, guys!

Lisa, will certainly be in touch for future testing needs - thank you! (and I agree, a lot of people become vegan for health reasons, and grow more as a vegan from that)

cleanandkind, I too have a hard time finding the balance between trying to offer important/helpful info and not coming across as 'preachy'. It's a tough one, and the longer I've been vegan, I feel like people assume I'm going to take the "vegan diet" line anyhow, so I might be more reserved than I used to be! Hope you get good use out of ed&bv!!

VeganChef, wow, that's significant lifestyle change - congrats, and thanks!
