Ten Apples Up On Top

A friendly neighbor offered up free apples from their tree.  The girls were delighted to come home with a bag full of these fresh apples.  Aren't they pretty?  I love how they are smaller and more irregular-looking than most store-bought apples.

They are quite tart, much like a McIntosh in taste/texture.  I figure I'll use many of them in morning green smoothies, and am thinking of using the rest in a rustic applesauce - maybe blitz the lot up in the BlendTec skins intact, then simmer them up with maple syrup, cinnamon and maybe a few other sweet and earthy spices.  You guys have any other ideas for using up these (somewhat tart) apples?

On a totally separate and pity party note, kinda' bummed that I haven't been included in the VegNews Awards nominations this year.  Not for cookbook author or blog.  Boo.  Bummed.  I know the competition is stiff, and I've never won.  And, I realize it's trivial, but still, not to be nominated this year makes me feel blue.

First, my husband loves McIntosh apples, but we can't find them anywhere around here.....and this place is not known for growing apples. That's one thing I miss about living in Ohio a couple of years ago.....so many apples.

Second...you SHOULD'VE been up for one of those awards! Your are amazing cookbook author and blogger and so many people rave about you. I'm kind of surprised....ah well. Maybe next year :)

we love a good apple crisp.. and if the apples are tart, then adding in some raspberries or sweet cherries helps to balance it all out!

You are always on my top list for vegan cookbook authors. I shout it from the rooftops in Toronto - Colleen often chimes in too. We think you're genius.

Those look like transparent apples--absolutely the BEST apple for baking! They freeze well too. No need to peel, just core, slice and freeze. They make the best apple sauce (with some ginger, cinnamon and cardamom), crisp and pies.

Enjoy!

Transparent apples are perfect for pies! Guess the girls will be getting an apple pie after all!

Nominated or not, you're cookbooks are excellent. I hope you're truly proud of yourself!!

That is strange about not being nominated since I visit so many sites where you are mentioned as their fave. Plus, I come across so many people who love your books. Too bad.

Regarding the apples, they do look delicious. However, I just finished reading Garden Spells (a fiction book that I recommend) and I'm going to stay away from apples for a while. :-)

To the Moffat Family: HA! I love Garden Spells and I can understand the temporary aversion to apples!! I read the book when it first came out so I'm good though! I love apples in all their forms and incarnations!
Next year we'll all cross our fingers and toes at the same time and you'll make the list. And it's not petty. You are fabulous and it's natural to feel disappointed.

VeganLisa is right - I think you're wonderful and whoever made those VegNews noms is the son of a silly person.

You do good work for vegans and veganism every day, so don't let this get you down!

I actually just voted and noticed that you weren't included for Best Cookbook Author. You'll be happy to know that I added you in!!

I typed you in for best cookbook author, too. Hopefully they won't make this mistake next year! I LOVE your cookbooks so much and will keep buying them so long as you keep writing them

I was surprised you weren't nominated too, so I wrote your name in! I use your cookbooks more than any others.

Nominated or not, we still love you and your cookbooks!

Maybe whip up that apple pie your daughter was asking you to make "while you were at it" the other day? =)

Sorry about not being nominated. For the record, your cookbooks are among my "go-to" cookbooks in my daily cooking. And if cookies are on my mind, I really don't bother with any other cookbook authors! Occasionally I'll give someone else's Earth Balanced based cookie a try, and I always think "eh...should have made one of Dreena's recipes!"

I love all your cookbooks and I still voted for you! Added you in the other column!!! You are the best! I couldn't be vegan without you!

I was super surprised you weren't in there. I remember thinking, WHATTT. They're probably waiting until your new book next year! :)

I think it's a travesty that you're not on the list! I'll echo everyone else and say your books are at the top of my list. Nobody does vegan baking better than you (and, as you know, your recipes were huge inspiration for my own cookbook--also not nominated!). I've added you in as well. If they're smart, they'll update the polls!
