Working Mom Images vs Real Life! (and brief blogging break)

I have been logging a lot of computer hours lately.  For good reason, as I'm working on my new website as well as some marketing details for the release of Let Them Eat Vegan.  (reminder, if you haven't picked up a copy, if you can hold off and mark your calendars for March 13th - please buy then... details very soon!)

But funny, when I had a quick search for images of moms on computers and working from home, I came up with this:

and even THIS!
Really?!  Look how tidy their work spaces are!  And these ladies - so fresh, perky, relaxed, yep they've got it all figured out..  I'm not even going to comment on the mother pumping her breast milk.  Come on!  This is not how moms at home work!!

THESE more accurately represent how moms work...
'

and, some of us have even been here:
but, most days it's something like this...
Anyone relate?!  Anyhow, this 'momputer' is taking a short pause from blogging to focus on these book and website details, but will be back asap with news and more giveaways!

So tell me, fellow mamas - what photos are a glimpse of your day?!

Media versus Reality - love the pictures they tell the truth.

As I sit here in my immaculate white ensemble, sipping my green tea....with my child repeating over & over how bored she is while crumbling her toast on the cat....I am always struggling to keep afloat - aren't we all?

Oh my, I am laughing so hard! Look at how tone that mom's tummy is too(the one pumping her milk while standing?!?)!! I have been known to nurse and walk around but not standing while pumping. I guess because I had a manual pump. Anyhow...Wow, I can more identify with the later pictures, though. Too funny!!

I'm not a mommy yet - but love being an aunt. And yes, the top pictures just frustrate me. No wonder mothers today feel they need to "do it all" with a smile on their face.

Okay - I'll admit to trying to pump while on a conference call. I was not smiling like that lady. More like frantically pushing the 'mute' button while trying not to spill milk and trying to take notes.

Those first pictures are a joke.

@Michelle, there's nothing wrong with pumping at work! I give credit to women who take that extra step to breastfeed - big credit. It's that image, right? As if you'd be looking that peppy - and have those toned abs - when pumping at work. What an ideal to try to live up to!! Ridiculous.

Thank you all for your laughs back, I love to hear from you, every time!

I love that you've been posting not only on food lately, but also on issues regarding gender, motherhood, and activism. It's a dimension of your writing and work that I love!

Totally relate! My house is ALWAYS a mess even when I've just cleaned it. I homeschool two kids, am active in my eldest's public education, and my husband works from home so we LIVE in our home.

oh, this made me laugh. after pouring so much effort into my blog, especially since the new year... I started to lose sight of what really mattered-- having this creative outlet, but ALSO interaction with friends, my children, my husband. as a working mom, it's so easy to get sucked into the idyllic notion that you can do it all. just this week, I stepped away from my computer, headed out with a cup of delicious tea, parked where there was a nice view and 1 hour before preschool pick-up. i listed how I was *truly* feeling.... not what I write on my blog, not the supermom image I share with my readers... but really where I felt I was in life, and what would make me feel more fulfilled. interestingly, I wanted to keep writing my blog, but I also desired more balance. I am SURE you-- and all busy mom writers-- can relate. and so, I have decided to set aside time each day to work. but as with any job outside the home, there is going to be an end time when I "leave" work, and re-enter the happy chaos of my wonderful life. we'll see how this goes! who knows, if it works, then I just may be one of those blissful, organized moms in the first few photos. ha! maybe!
