Sweet Pea left me a note that Vive le Vegan! is included in Homemakers.com list of "5 favorite vegetarian cookbooks".

I had to pop a brief post on about this, first because hey, it's cool... plus, I knew nothing about it and wanted to thank Sweet Pea!
Second, because the New Moosewood Cookbook is on this list. My start in vegetarian cooking (well any cooking actually) was with the original version of this cookbook. I loved the charm of its hand-written recipes, playful doodles and drawings, and of course the recipes! This book helped me appreciate vegetarian cooking and I grew into vegan cooking from it. I still refer to it from time to time because it is truly a unique cookbook, and has become a classic. Very cool!! (okay, I'll stop saying cool now!)

Congrats on making the list! I must admit that your book is the only one on the list that I have ever used (or even looked at). I do have World Vegetarian on hold at the library though.

I ordered your books from amazon a few days ago and they will be on the way to Istanbul within a few days. Can't wait to go back home, but I have to wait one more month...

Congratulations, Dreena! Your book is the only one I own from that list and I have quite a shelf of vegetarian cookbooks. I have three or so Moosewood books, but not the one on their list. I have been enjoying your book- I made the Apple Muffins yesterday- I substituted sunflower seeds for the hemp nuts (I have not seen them in any stores here). We've (my daughter and me) eaten almost the whole dozen already. I'll be making them again soon! It's really a great cookbook.
Hi Dreena :) Congratulations! I got Vive out of our local library and it has been a wonderful find. Thought I'd let you know that I made your Fudgy Brownies last night and they were a super hit! Just wanted to thank you for spending so much time doing what you do~ we're not vegan but, in general are veggie and try and eat healthy. :o) My husband was most impressed with the fact that I didn't have to use butter, hard marg or eggs in the brownies and they turned out great. Way to go Dreena!! I have 2 books on the list. Yours and the Moosewood book by Mollie Katzen. It was one of my first vegetarian cookbooks and I think a "must have" for any cook. Same for Vive Le Vegan. Can't wait for your new book. Remember my offer to test recipes still stands!

Thanks, Danielle. :) I don't have World Vegetarian, but I plan to get it. I think it would offer a lot of info on using new spices and different vegetables, and help to get one out of doing the same ol' thing with foods - esp produce.

Hi Addy, yes, there are quite a few Moosewood cookbooks available, and for good reason! Thank you for those comments, and for letting me know those muffins worked out for you... super! I have never substituted other seeds, mostly because hemp seeds are very small and tender and they also absorb some moisture in the muffin, so I never even thought to give them a whirl with something else. I'm really pleased they turned out well with sunflower seeds - good for me to know without having to test it out myself. :)
Hello Tanya! Yay for brownies!!! You know, it's been so long since I've had baked goods with butter, milk, cream or eggs that I almost forget what they taste like and the textural difference from my vegan foods. So, to hear that you and your husband loved them that much is rewarding, and helps me know that I'm 'keeping in touch' with how people want baked goods to taste. Thanks!!

Yes, the muffins were tasty with the sunflower seeds, but be warned that the seeds turned green! I searched the web and found out that there is a phytochemical in sunflower seeds that reacts with baking powder and baking soda. It tasted fine, but the green did look a bit odd!

Addy, that is MOST bizarre!! I don't think I've ever noticed that myself before. I'm trying to think of things I've made with sunflower seeds, and I think most of them have been in casseroles, etc, so maybe that's why they didn't turn green!! Well, I'm certainly glad you looked into that - thank you - in case I pop some sunflower seeds into cookies or other baked goods, now I'll know they haven't "gone off"! That really is funny!!
Mollie Katzen inspired me to go vegetarian, and so I was not entirely happy that she is no longer vegetarian (she came out saying she now eats free-range chicken and fish). I still love The Moosewood Cookbook, though!
I recently went through and tagged the pages of either vegan or veganizable stuff so I don't have to paw through it all the time. I also love The Enchanted Broccoli Forest!
Hi vegan vulcan, I didn't realize that about Mollie Katzen. Well, she has been very influential with her cookbooks, and I'm sure that a lot of people have taken steps towards eating less meat, dairy and eggs just from using her recipes. As with you, her recipes helped me become vegetarian and really began my journey into cooking - and loving it! Great ideas tagging the pages... I haven't done that myself, but should!
