Hemp Burgers

I know, the name isn't great. But, let me assure you, these burgers are unbelievably good!

I just created these Hemp Burgers a couple of weeks ago for ED& BV, and have just one more run-through to check everything is a-ok, and they are fini! I use Manitoba Harvest hemp products in my recipes, and for more hemptastic ideas, check out these other food posts.

Man, these are really scrumptious, and while you can pop them in a pita and have them with traditional burger fixings, I love them just on their own. This batch was served with roasted delicata squash rings as well as baked potatoes and a salad (obviously not shown), and drizzled with... what do you think??? Yes, balsamic/flax oil. Oh, and if you guys still aren't convinced that this stuff is good...

read this comment from "Dutch Girl" from my last post:
I must admit, I did not have high hopes. Flax oil and delicious in one sentence?! I did not believe it. But you were right. It is really good. I actually had to stop myself of eating way too much (it is oil, after all). Thank you so much, my 'struggle' with flax oil is over (and I don't have to throw barely used bottles away anymore)!
Still not convinced? Go try it yourself!!

Oh, and if any of you have a decent name for these burgers, chime in. I need something that sounds better than "hemp burgers". I mean, this name just doesn't do them justice, and really sounds very 'vegan', you know?...

Mmmm... can't wait to get my hands on that recipe! I am really into patties lately. I was just procrastinating on dinner and thinking about your delicious falafels from TEV!

Oh yes! My absolute top favorite salad dressing - really swoon-worthy. Dr. Joel Fuhrman (Eat to Live) is where I got the 'recipe' from and I am addicted to it.

Hemptastic Patties... wow I'm lame! You've really got me curious with this recipe Dreena. I'm so excited to try it, especially because it seems very different from any other patties I've has. Plus they sure do look yummy (as well as the roasted delicata squash rings)!

Ok, all I can think about is Midnight Munchie Burgers and Nothing like the Brownie Burgers. ;)

I did want to say I was at the local (small town) library the other month, and saw Vive on the shelf!! I was quite surprised, especially since they have very few veggie, much less vegan cookbooks. It made me unusually happy for the rest of the day to think of that book sitting there.

Dreena you are so cool. I would never evenn think of hemp in burgers!
The squash rings also really catch me eyes, and tastebuds, and memory - I have two of them in the cupboard and it just might be ring time.

Wow, those burgers look great. I've just recently started adding more hemp my diet and I love it!

I've been into roasted squash rings lately, too. I'm not sure what it is, but they are just so good!

Hmm, how about Nuts For Hemp Patties?

No name ideas, but the burgers look awesome. They seem like the hold up really well. Can't wait to get my hands on them!

How about Cannabis Maximus?

Or, you could name your burgers after Nigel Freemarijuana. He was for many years the public face of the HEMP Party (Help End Marijuana Prohibition) in Brisbane standing as a candidate in various elections. (wikopedia info....I didn't know this!)

These look magnificent.

I am embarrassed to say that I am a hemp virgin. Since you have are such a huge hemp-advocate, my curiousity is piqued.

Thanks to you, I'm a believer in hemp now. I have to make an hour and a half journey to obtain it, but I try to keep it stocked! These patties sound great!

how do you make squash rings??

I am definitely going to be looking for Balsamic flax oil!

Thanks for your comments and suggestions everyone, I'll mull them over!

Lady di, that's cool... and I'm happy my book is sitting on the shelf there too!! :)

Megan, you know just a *little* too much about hemp, don't you??! JK! Thanks for the suggestions and the info. :)

Anonymous, it's quite easy to make the squash rings. I used delicata squash. They are small and oblong. Use a veg peeler to remove the hard peel. Then, cut in half horizontally (keeping the circular shape) so you can get a spoon and scoop out the seeds from each half. Once clean, slice each of those halves into rings. Toss with some olive oil, salt and pepper, and into the oven at 400 until they are golden brown and roasty! Enjoy...

Hi Dreena,

I love your site, thanks for the great recipes. Regarding flax seed oil, I mistakenly grabbed a bottle of cinnamon flavored flax seed oil, I really don't know what to do with it - any idea on how to use such a large amount quickly? Right now it is in my fridge and I mix a little here and there, for pancakes and such...thanks!

All I can think about is how my brother in law thinks it's funny to eat hemp (although he often does & loves any recipe I bring him from VLV) so - I keep thinking of Spiccoli burgers - maybe it's too obscure pop referency??? Or just plain lame dude?

An interesting title could be Mari-UWANNA-Try-These-Burgers!

They look really tasty, Ive tried vegan-hemp burgers before and I liked them alot, though some commercialized brands still taste hemp-y.
I really enjoy your blog, and I think my readers will too so if you dont have a problem, I'm going to add a link to your wonderful site on my blog (your blog rocks, and so does the title, I take French in high school)
Keep up the awesome work,

Believe it or not I have never done anything with hemp oil, seeds/nuts, powder, etc. No one around here sees the health value in it and I have NEVER seen it anywhere. I think they think it's all related to the mary jane - I know it's not but unless you're veg (and some veg don't even know) you don't know about it.

Hi Harini, sorry I missed your comment for a few days. I've never seen/tried cinnamon flax oil - sounds good actually! I'd try it out in smoothies, or maybe mixed with nut butters for sandwiches, or mixed with maple syrup for pancakes/waffles, or stirred into soy yogurt. It seems like it might fit sweeter type of sauces/drinks/foods, so I'd go that route.

Angela, that's an awesome idea! Might use that one - it's great, thanks. :)

Hi Allie, I'm happy to have you link my blog, thanks. That's a cute suggestion too, I don't know where you guys come up with these creative names, but it most definitely helps me!

Harmonia, hemp is new to a lot of people - vegans included. I love working with it in recipes to show folks how to incorporate it in their foods, because it's full of protein and other nutritional perks.
