Oh BABY, here's the scoop!

Through the last number of months I've eluded to being particularly busy - and also having some personal matters to attend to - and also having an overly-active interest in developing dessert recipes. So, here's the scoop... I'm pregnant, and we will soon be welcoming a third child into our family!

As you know, I don't stray too far from cooking-themed posts, this is a vegan cooking blog afterall. But, I wanted to share this information because I've been evasive about certain matters in the last months. Also, I realize that many of you are interested in how I do this vegan thing with a young family, maybe because you have young children of your own or are about to enter this stage of life. So, it's important for me to bring this news to you for these reasons and also because once this babe arrives, I will be absent from my blog for quite a few weeks until we adjust to our new family with a small baby and two busy children.

You may remember that in early fall, I wasn't blogging about cooking for almost two months. Now I can explain it was because I was very (VERY) sick. Not just a little morning sickness, guys. Oh no. And that term irks me beyond belief, because most women with pregnancy nausea will tell you that it doesn't end in the morning. If only! Some might have this experience, but with all three of my pregnancies I have been sick all day long. Cooking was repulsive to me, and it was all I could do to get through the day. Thankfully, I'm past all of that now, and am feeling quite good and enjoying the movements of this little one inside me. I still am not cooking with garlic, however. Garlic was the enemy! I couldn't even bare the smell of garlic bulbs in storage in the garage - onions as well. I continue to cook everything without garlic and onions - much to our kids' pleasure!

And, once the nausea passed for good... it was dessert time! Bring 'em on! I had times that I was making a new dessert every day, barely able to record any recipe notes... just because I had an idea which quickly developed into a craving! So, that's why you've seen so many dessert posts (and really, there were many more creations that I didn't make it to photos).

What's kind of funny is how this pregnancy surprised us (in a very good way, but a surprise nonetheless)! It was only a month earlier that hubby and I sold our crib, toddler bed, and had been giving away other baby items like clothes, baby linen, and play things! I remember standing in our front porch ready to sell our crib to an expecting couple, and hubby saying "are you sure, Dreena?"! That poor couple, ready to buy our crib and hubby with the last-minute pitch to have another baby!!! We've been busy the last few months, starting from scratch somewhat, shopping for a crib/mattress, car seat, linen, diapers, stroller, etc once again. It's thrown us for a bit of a loop with recent financial happenings, but we couldn't be happier getting ready to embrace this new baby into our lives.

As for your questions about the new cookbook, I must put it on hold for this and other reasons. I am working on another project (not a cookbook) which is in the very early stages but will likely consume a lot of my non-parenting time. I am not sure when I will be able to share details with you. I am continuing to develop and catalogue new recipes, and will share some of these on my recipes blog page.

Before I sign off, there have been a few comments in recent months on my posts from others that are pregnant. If you preggo mamas are still reading, now we can fully relate! :)

I will continue to post until this baby arrives, and will let you know more after babe is born (once I'm up to it). I'll be back with a food post soon.

Congrats to you and your family!
We thought we would only have two children as well and then we both itched for a third. Best thing in the world that could have ever happened...can't imagine if we would have missed out on knowing our charming third. Enjoy your journey! :)

Many, many congratualtions! I remember all-day sickness so well! It was wholemeal bread I couldn't stand. Husband was so embarrassed going into shops and buying white, stodgy bread! Hope the rest of your pregnancy swims along beautifully! :o)

YAY! congratulations dreena!

and i feel you: when pregnant with wren i was ill all day, and especially in the evening. i couldn't cook at all -- it was very demoralizing for me. sometimes i worry what will happen to poor wren when i'm pregnant with babe #2 and can't cook again. but then i joke she will be happy "all mama wants to cook is mac and 'cheese' and she naps with me now too!" hahahaha.

congrats again! when are you due?

Congratulations! I too had the horrible all day sickness with both my pregnancies AND it lasted into the third trimester! :( I remember not being able to cook, grocery shop, look in the cabinet, or my biggest enemy...the fridge!
Good luck with all the exciting changes!

Congratulations Dreena! That's wonderful news. I tend to lurk your blog but thought it would be nice to congratulate you and your family :)

And I can certainly relate to all day sickness. I had it with my first and with the twins it was all day, all pregnancy. I couldn't even look at bread and water without feeling awful. I'm glad you're feeling better!

Congratulations Dreena! I can understand the dessert cravings... my last pregnancy motivated me to improve my gluten-free baking... sometimes fruit just wasn't enough for my sweet tooth!

I am so excited for you and your family. :-)

Congratulations!!!! I haven't offically announced it yet, but I'm pregnant too. I'm only 9 weeks and still in the midst of the all day sickness. I haven't cooked in a while either, it just makes me feel so sick. I'm glad you're feeling better. Again, congrats!

Sorry about the nausea etc. I was lucky in that way and am in my 7th month of a twin pregnancy without it. However, I havent been able to enjoy any of your wonderful posts lately because despite a healthy vegan diet, I ended up with insulin dependent GD. No sweets here until the boys arive.
I look forward to reading what you post when you have the time and watching for advice to see when you start feeding this new little one.

Let me echo the congratulations! A vegan pregnancy sounds so exciting; it gives you all the more reason to experiment with new tasty recipes, as well as prove that a vegan pregnancy can be just as nutritious and satisfying.
I definitely plan to use your baby food guide in Vive le Vegan, as well as your amazing recipes, which show up in almost all of my meals, to help me along when I get pregnant.

Congratulations!!! I can completely relate because we are also expecting our 3rd baby and I have only gotten over the dreadful morning (a.k.a. all-day) sickness during the past couple of weeks. I have a vegan food blog which I completely abandoned for 3 months because I couldn't even stand to be in the kitchen, let alone cook anything! I am glad you are feeling better and hungry again, and again congratulations to you and your family!

YAY! Congratulations! I can't even imagine if I had to stop using garlic and onions in cooking. I wouldn't have anything to cook.

I just thought of another thing... I read a book called, "You're Not Sick, You're Thirsty," recently, and the author talked about how dehydrated women get during pregnancy. He said dehydration is a huge cause of morning sickness. I've never been pregnant, so I can't vouch for it, but it might be worth a try to drink a HUGE amount of water to get rid of the yuckiness.

Lindsay said...

Congratulations!!!!

I'm 22 weeks pregnant and I get a mild case of hyperemesis in pregnancy (in that I have to be on meds and only occasionally need to be on fluids at the hospital). I'm just starting to get over the hump, now I only vomit maybe once a week or less (so much better than 3-5x a day every day with round the clock nausea!).

I bought one of your cookbooks awhile back and now that I am feeling better I am so excited to be digging into the recipes! I am so thankful another vegan mom with small kids like you exists out there, you're so helpful to me!
